Let me introduce myself.

I’m Michelle Melton Cox, and I help people in midlife and people in recovery learn how to start, write, and finish a book.

I teach people the learnable skills to embrace their secret dream of writing a book so they can go from feeling like an imposter with a silly book idea to being an author who did the hard work and wrote the damn book.

I help people in midlife find joy and accomplishment and make peace with the passage of time, because when they work with me, they avoid regret by finally writing the book they always dreamed of writing. I also have a deep passion for helping people in recovery turn past pain into stories that matter. Getting your story into the world is a gift to others, and it lets you take ownership of that story in new and powerful ways.

“I believe in the power of story to create joy from hardship, make peace with time, quiet fear, euthanize isolation, and invite others into a community of common experience.”

You need to write your story.

You feel a tug to write. You need to write your story, but you lack confidence. The doubts sound like this:

  • “Is my idea foolish?”
  • “Am I foolish for considering this?”
  • “Do I have the skills to write a book?”
  • “Is it too late? Am I too old?”
  • “Where do I even start?”

Doubt can take over and make you want to abandon the whole thing. But the urge to write — to share the story inside you — won’t leave you alone. I’ll help you enjoy your unearthed creativity and put your experiences to good use. I’ll help you skip the regret-fueled crisis and feel the joy of finally finishing that manuscript and calling yourself a writer.

A little about my background.

I’ve been a lover of words and a professional writer my entire adult life, and now I help people make the leap from dreamers (a good thing) to doers (a better thing). I’m an Author Accelerator Certified Book Coach with certifications in fiction, nonfiction, and memoir. I hold a journalism degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and have more than three decades of experience in writing, editing, and communications.

My life experiences and my years of sobriety taught me that story can create joy from hardship, make peace with time, quiet fear, end isolation, and build community. I’ve lived all of those benefits, and so have my clients. They’ve gone from carrying a hardship to holding a manuscript that can help someone else feel less alone. They’ve gone from dreaming about writing to calling themselves authors.
